At CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026, Hitachi Construction Machinery and Gravis Robotics demonstrated the future of autonomous excavation with a live showcase featuring the Hitachi ZX135US-7 excavator equipped with the Gravis Rack retrofit kit.
The demonstration highlighted how advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, and automation can transform conventional excavators into intelligent machines capable of performing repetitive tasks autonomously. During the event, an experienced operator first trained the excavator to dig a trench using the Gravis Copilot system. A volunteer from the audience then activated the machine, which successfully completed the trenching task without direct control inputs.
The Gravis Copilot platform provides operators with real-time surveying, augmented terrain visualization, utility mapping, and precision grading capabilities through a portable tablet interface known as the Slate. The system also enhances jobsite safety with 3D people-scanning technology that can detect personnel entering designated work zones and issue warnings to operators.
According to Gravis Robotics CEO Dr. Ryan Luke Johns, the collaboration with Hitachi demonstrates the benefits of open-machine interfaces and accelerates the adoption of autonomous construction technologies in North America.
In addition to autonomous trenching, key features of the Gravis solution include remote operation, automated repetitive-task execution, 3D surveying, and digital terrain visualization. The technology allows a single operator to supervise multiple machines, improving productivity while reducing labor requirements. Visitors to Hitachi Construction Machinery’s booth experienced firsthand how automation and intelligent assistance are reshaping the future of construction equipment.
